Oxford
Not many people visiting the area can resist the University City of Oxford famous for its dreaming spires
and seat of learning. The setting of the world famous “Inspector Morse” and latterly “Lewis and
Endeavour” crime thrillers the former being written by Colin Dexter a local resident only adds to the rich
tapestry Oxford has to offer its visitors. Even if you only have a short stay look out for the world famous
Bodleian Library or take in a visit to Christchurch College or the Sheldonian Theatre. Carfax Tower in the
very centre of Oxfords shopping centre is well worth a visit and if you can manage the steps the view
from the roof is breathtaking.
Blenheim Palace
Home of the Duke of Marlborough the palace and grounds are the epitome of our English heritage. Set in
the heart of Oxfordshire and within 3 miles of the Highwayman, Blenheim was the home of World War II
Prime Minister Winston Churchill whose grave can be found in the small village church at Bladon, the
village nestles close to the estate. Complete with garden centre and extensive water features Blenheim is
now home to The Game Fair and of course the International Horse trials. Also used as a summer open air
concert venue few people that have visited leave unimpressed by the pure splendour of the buildings and
grounds.
The Oxford Canal
Adjacent to the hotels beer garden runs the Southern section of the Oxford Canal. Take a walk along its
meandering towpath and to the north you will soon come across the canal side village of Thrupp neatly
set along its banks, Thrupp offers residency to more boat owners than houses and still maintains a British
Waterways maintenance depot today.
Oxford can be easily reached by the towpath if you set off in a southerly direction. The canal runs directly
into the very heart of the city offering links to the Thames at Dukes Cut or alternatively via a swing
bridge close to the city centre in Hythe Bridge Street. It’s a three hour walk there and back but the views
from the canal over Oxfordshire's fields and woodlands are outstanding.
